Following UNiTE’s the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, we highlight women-lawyers and human rights defenders who work to end violence against women and girls around the word.
Anna Rivina, a lawyer from Russian Federation, works to combat domestic violence against women and girls. She launched a successful project called nasiliu.net (no to violence).
The project’s aim is to support women, victims of domestic violence, by providing information and practical advice on what to do when women face domestic violence. In the summer of 2016, Anna and her group launched a mobile app for those who encountered domestic violence. In the app, there is practical information and helpful tools for the victims when faced with violence. Such information includes a list of the crisis centers, helpful contact numbers and an "alarm" button, which, when pressed, sends a text message requesting help and geolocation of the victim. During the year, it was used by about 2,000 people from Moscow (37%), St. Petersburg (14%) and other cities in Russia.
On November 25, 2016, on the international day of the elimination of violence against women, Anna and her group launched the new website with complete and up-to-date information about domestic violence in Russia. Since then, around 40,000 people visited the site. On November 25, 2017, the photo project "Men Against Violence" was published, where famous men talk about the dangers of violence against women. On the first day it was published on FB, more than 70 thousand people viewed the video.
